Citizens Climate Lobby, 10/22

Watch the Recording!

Climate is one of our two pressing environmental crises – the other is the pandemic – and it has been long in need of advocacy against the climate deniers who control governments. Like the recycling pioneers, courage and diligence to curb the impacts of burning fossil fuels has been maintained by people of courage.

Our featured interview is with Ted Obbard of the Citizens Climate Lobby, Alameda County Chapter.

Ted will discuss their program and advocacy of the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act (H.R.2307), other relevant initiatives, and the challenges yet to be faced with reversing climate change.

The Show will feature a new and exciting format change for the Archives.

We will hear excerpts from a number of recyclers’ interviews about Threats and Dangers they faced in their careers, ranging from physical threats to technical sabotage to economic injustices. Some of the stories are funny and others are distressing. All of them show that when recycling has called out courage and ingenuity in its organizers, they have responded impressively.

Upcycled Food Economy, 9/22

There were multiple interesting interviews at our September ZWAC Show , with subjects ranging from increasing the recovery of wasted food, to why are the dead fish in the bay being landfilled, not composted, and the most significant CA Supreme Court decision involving solid waste in over 30 years. Plus an interview with Neil Seldman, one of our most accomplished Zero Waste advocates along with Susan Kinsella’s readings from interviews with Neil.

Zero Waste advocacy is often local advocacy. This show features an upcoming political battle in Redwood City where advocates seek to impose restrictions on single use disposables in all jurisdictions of San Mateo County. The committee interviewed Alejandra Warren and, of Plastic Free Future in Pacifica and Sally Liu of Peak Plastic Foundation, who are leading the fight.

Yes, the idea is to avoid plastic this and every month, but what do you do with plastic household discards? Give them to friends, neighbors and even strangers! I suggest the following  platforms.

Facebook is a well-established resource for location-based groups. See the examples listed below. If one chooses to not have a Facebook account, please consider Freecycle, Buy Nothing Project, Nextdoor and Craigslist.

Cleaning out your pantry? Need to get rid of edible food on the spot?

Try out Olio – this application connects neighbors and local communities so that surplus food could be shared and not thrown away. I personally used this application when I lived in Oakland (pre-pandemic).
