The CA Legislative Process and You

NCRA’s new webinar series, The California Legislative Process and You, starts this Fall.  The first webinar will introduce why this work is so important and explain our analysis and advocacy procedures. Members of the Board who perform bill analysis for their agencies, will discuss how they learned to do it – guided or thrown in the deep end, the importance of sharing information, the challenges of wearing multiple hats, and how they work with lobbyists. There will be Q&A and discussion after the presentations.

The second webinar, held in xxxx  will be focused on what comes of these efforts, how working with other groups and lobbyists can extend our reach and what happens if you don’t follow the rules carefully and track your positions with all players. Future topics might include working with legislators and their staff and initiating legislation.

Our goal is to raise industry literacy as well teach interested parties how to analyze proposed legislation and determine next steps. Speakers include:

Doug Brooms, ZWAC Co-Chair and NCRA Legislative Lead
John Moore, ZWAC Co-Chair and Producer of the ZWAC Show
David Krueger, Solid Waste Programs Division Manager, City of Sunnyvale
Julia Au, Senior Outreach, Education and Compliance Manager, RethinkWaste
Freddy Coronado, Residential Zero Waste Specialist, San Francisco Department of the Environment, and , Zero Waste Youth

The NCRA Zero Waste Advocacy Committee is very active in addressing recycling and Zero Waste related legislation. We select, analyze and discuss relevant bills, write letters and work with our partners to gather support for our positions.

Our primary focus is recycling and waste, working with a number of organizations including Californians Against Waste and Sierra Club California. Also, as part of the Clean Seas Coalition, we focus on plastic pollution, marine debris and other environmental bills.
