Consumers urge Clorox to "Take Back The Filter!"
By Beth Terry
Why are Brita water filters recyclable in Europe but not North America? In 1992, the original company producing Brita brand water filters in Germany created a system to collect used filter cartridges at the point of purchase and at its own facility, where the filters are dismantled and all components reused/recycled.
In 2000, The Clorox Company bought the North American division of the Brita Products Company. Since that time, The Clorox Company has not provided any way for the filters to be recycled in the U.S. or Canada. There is nowhere for the filters to go except the landfill or incineration, adding to the plastic waste already choking the planet.
Now, a group of concerned citizens has created the Take Back The Filter campaign to urge The Clorox Company to create a program for reusing/recycling the Brita filter material. The campaign includes an online petition, used filter collection (with a mailing address for sending them back to the campaign organizers), and a letter writing campaign. Take Back The Filter is calling on consumers to sign on and spread the word.
