GreenWaste is currently seeking highly motivated, professional, self-directed and enthusiastic candidate to fill the Environmental Outreach Manager position under our collection contract with the City of Palo Alto. Candidates must have experience managing a comprehensive public outreach and education program and posses a strong desire to generate and sustain the highest possible level of diversion by building and expanding waste prevention, reuse and recycling programs. Ideal candidates will have a special interest in zero waste, experience with public outreach and educational programs within the solid waste industry, and will be able to identify opportunities for increased participation in waste reduction programs within the commercial and residential sectors.
Financial compensation will be commensurate with applicable experience ($70,000-80,000 annually based on full-time employment) and includes a comprehensive benefit package. These positions are non-exempt salaried positions based on a Monday - Friday daytime schedule. Some early morning, evening, weekend and holiday work will be required. Wanted - NCRA News Editor [posted 12/2/2008]
NCRA is seeking an editor for the NCRA News publication starting in mid-January (for February edition). The News is a monthly newsletter that contains articles related to the reuse, recycling and composting industries. Each edition typically includes current news, submissions by members, articles of interest, a calendar of upcoming industry conferences and activities, the agenda and meeting details, the minutes from the previous meeting and a legislative report. The main responsibilities of the editor are noted below. The design and production portion of the NCRA News is handled by a separate NCRA staff person.
Additional responsibilities and/or compensation may be available. Please submit qualifications, a letter of interest, and any questions to Janice Sitton, current NCRA News editor, at Janice.sitton@yahoo.com by December 15, 2008.
Basic Responsibilities of Editor
- Ensure NCRA News is distributed to members a minimum of 10 days prior to each monthly meeting. At a minimum, the NCRANews must include the agenda and meeting details for that month’s board meeting
- Solicit content from members and other industry contacts and/or contribute content as needed
- Send reminders to NCRA president, secretary, meeting and tours contact and regular contributors to ensure timely submissions and publication
- Upon receipt of draft minutes from NCRA secretary, circulate monthly meeting minutes to board members, receive track changes, and compile a final version of the minutes for publication
- Edit submissions for publication, sent back to contributors for fact checking, and submit for production in time to ensure distribution to members by publication date below
- Create outline of components for each month’s publication in Word for production staff
- Upload all submission files for production to Yahoo groups
- Check online and PDF versions of production draft for needed corrections/edits prior to distribution
- Work with production staff as needed to ensure timely distribution of the publication (production cycle typically takes a minimum of one week and weekend just prior to publication date)
Basic Requirements
- Must be self-starter who can work independently and without supervision
- Ability to work an average 10+ hours within a one to two week timeframe each month as indicated in publication schedule below, including some holiday weekends (currently, publication staff requires at least one week and one weekend to produce each edition)
- Editor must provide own work space, computer, phone, internet service, etc.
- Must be proficient in Word and Excel and have ability to view PDFs
- Must have access to the internet
- Must be detail oriented
- Needs basic knowledge of recycling and related industry information and jargon
- Work under a tight deadline to ensure sufficient time for production work and distribution to members
- Also desired – a high level of interest in and enthusiasm for zero waste and related issues (EPR, reduce/reuse/recycling, waste prevention, etc.)

Project Summary and Primary Responsibilities
- Establish and/or improve comprehensive waste reduction beverage container and other recyclable collection programs at multifamily housing facilities and student housing (USCS & CSUMB) in Monterey Bay Area (Monterey, Santa Cruz and San Benito Counties)
- Implement and administer collection and recycling operations
- Provide program outreach and promotion to target low-income multifamily housing facilities-Conduct initial and follow up waste assessments at each site
Implement comprehensive beverage container and other recyclable collection programs at sites
- Conduct door to door ed, kick off fiestas and waste reduction outreach workshops for multifamily tenants and staff
- Develop and distribute a Multifamily Recycling Resource Kit for agencies and multifamily facilities managers

Develop policy and/or contract language for housing lease agreements addressing recycling and bin ownership

Student Internship [posted 11/7/2008]
City of San Ramon Greenhouse Gas Emissions Analysis
The City of San Ramon seeks a graduate or exceptional undergraduate
student intern for fall semester. The intern will help the city begin
the process of tackling global warming emissions.
San Ramon has committed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by joining
the Cities for Climate Protection Campaign (CCP), a program of the
International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI). The
intern wit I work in City's Public Services Department to begin the CCP
process of developing a strategic local plan to reduce emissions.
To help San Ramon develop a local climate protection plan, the intern
will:
* Assist San Ramon in completing an inventory of green house gas (GHG)
emissions generated by City facilities, vehicles, and operations. The
intern will work with multiple City departments to collect information
and use GHG software to compile the emissions data and to forecast
future emissions.
* Help the City to begin designing its Local Action Plan to reduce GHG
emissions. This will involve aspects of energy efficiency, water
conservation, solid waste management, land use planning, and
transportation. It will include evaluation of current recycling program
for City facilities.
The City of San Ramon seeks students with:
* Prior experience working for and knowledge of government, particularly
local/city government;
* Experience with issues surrounding energy use, transportation,
utilities, and/or solid waste;
* Assertive personality, persistence, and strong people skills critical
for working with a variety of city
departments and personalities;

Solid Waste and Recycling Manager [posted 10/16/2008]

The City of Berkeley, located in northern California, is seeking a hands-on, proactive solid waste management professional to serve as the new Solid Waste and Recycling Manager. Reporting to the Director of Public Works, the Manager will have oversight management responsibility for the day-to-day activities of the Solid Waste Management Division. The Division has 110 employees with an operational budget of approximately $24 million. Berkeley offers a comprehensive solid waste management program that emphasizes waste reduction through the promotion of recycling, the expansion of the market for recycled material, the stimulation of community interest in recycling activities, and the collection and disposal of both residential and commercial solid waste.
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a major in environmental science, engineering, business administration or a closely related field is required. Five (5) years of combined contract and program administration experience, of which, three (3) years of experience must be in the field of solid waste management, coupled with two (2) years of experience managing a sizable waste collection and/or recycling program is also required. GENERAL SUMMARY:
The Recycling Program Coordinator is responsible for outreach to small businesses, multi-family units and schools to develop and promote recycling programs. The Program Coordinator will be responsible for the creation of electronic presentations and printed materials. Some projects will require working with city environmental staff to promote recycling initiatives.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Work with schools, small businesses and multi-family units to develop and promote recycling programs.
· Work on-site at schools to assist students and/or other staff to separate waste into appropriate containers.
· Conduct site surveys at schools to determine trash and recycling service levels; make appropriate recommendations regarding size and location of bins.
· Work with existing education materials and develop presentation materials for schools, teachers, etc.
· Presentations to teachers, classes, assemblies, custodial staff, cafeteria workers, etc.
· Operate Cycler robot; coordinating a shared schedule with other WM jurisdictions.
· Develop incentive programs/contests to be used in the schools with students and/or staff.
· Respond to inquiries/telephone calls from schools, teachers, students or parents regarding recycling.
· Work with WM personnel to ensure service is provided as required.
· Develop plan for, and conduct ongoing monitoring and analysis of recycling programs.
· Work with other agencies, as needed, to develop recycling programs & presentations.
· Assist with public events promoting recycling.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
· Demonstrated computer proficiency in Word, Excel and Power Point.
· Must have reliable transportation.
· Valid California Drivers License.
· Excellent organizational skills.
· Oral presentation experience.
· Able to consistently lift 50 pounds.

Volunteer & Help CUESA be Waste Wise
The Center for Urban Education About Sustainable Agriculture is proud to launch it's new Waste Wise Farmers Market. In an effort to green the market, we're introducing custom-made Waste Wise stations and informational displays around the market. To ensure every can, plate, fork, and crumb makes it to the right place, we'll need a team of volunteer monitors each week.
As a Waste Wise station monitor, not only will you help divert tons of waste from a landfill, you'll also help educate thousands of shoppers about being waste wise.
We need volunteers every Tuesday from 9:30am - 2pm beginning April 15, and every Saturday from 7:30am - 2pm beginning April 19th. This opportunity is perfect for both individuals and groups of all ages. Each day will begin with a half hour training and refreshments. Gloves, aprons and PikStiks will be provided.
