The National Recycling Coalition and the Connecticut Bottle Bill

In the Spring of 2007, it came to the attention of the NCRA News editorial board that good evidence existed that Kate Krebs, then Executive Director of the National Recycling Coalition, spoke against expansion of the Connecticut bottle bill during meetings with state elected officials in Connecticut. The editorial team, led by Arthur Boone, assembled this story that was published in the June, 2007 NCRA News.

In the light of Ms. Krebs recent resignation from her NRC job, it seemed  worthwhile to give renewed notice to the events of the spring of 2007. To the best knowledge of the NCRA News editorial board, the NRC board took no action to sanction or punish Ms. Krebs for failing to adhere to NRC's long-standing policy of neutrality on bottle bills. We have no information on whether or not Ms. Krebs' behaviour in Connecticut was in any way connected with her departure from the NRC.  NCRA itself was an active proponent of the Caifornia bottle bill in 1986 and has supported the many amendments to that legislation.

It has always been NCRA's hope that the NRC will learn to support bottle bills; we have worked to that end for many years and hope the current members of the NRC Board of Directors will seek a replacement CEO who will support bottle bills in states and at the federal level.
